The Royal Grammar School Guildford
An Illustrated History

Celebrating 500 years of Guildford's oldest institution

The Royal Grammar School (RGS) is Guildford's oldest institution, and notably one of its most illustrious. Located at the centre of the High Street on its original site, the sixteenth-century building stands as a symbol of proud traditions and heritage on the one side, and a positive view of the future on the other.

Old Guildfordians, historians, pupils, staff and the entire Guildford community will enjoy this handsomely illustrated hardback of the eminent institution that has been the home to varied alumni which include the Archbishop of Canterbury George Abbot, New Zealand Premier Sir George Grey, Bishop of Winchester Robert Horne and Monty Python member Terry Jones.

Over the years RGS has shared its expertise with the wider public through programmes such as educating technical scholars from elementary schools in the late 1890s to teaching young boys and girls how to play string instruments in the early 2000s. The Royal Grammar School Guildford: An Illustrated History celebrates 500 years of life-changing opportunities for students and the wider Guildford community.

'RGS is no ivory tower, no forcing-frame, for an intellectual elite. Combined with the multitude of opportunities on offer outside the classroom, this is a school where boys treat each other as equals, irrespective of where their talents lie.'

'We are absolutely delighted; the book looks stunning and something of which we should all be very proud. Thank you to you and your team for your advice, patience and guidance: it was very much appreciated.'

- JW Pressley, Senior Master, RGS Guildford

'We absolutely love it and we are incredibly grateful to you and your team for all the hard work you have put in to make this project such a fantastic reality.'

- Kathryn Sweet, Head of Admissions, RGS Guildford
