King Edward’s School, Birmingham: Through 475 Years

King Edward’s School, Birmingham will celebrate its 475th anniversary in 2027. While much has changed at King Edward’s over the course of four and three-quarter centuries, the mission to provide an excellent education to boys has remained steadfast since 1552. 

The King Edward’s treasury will include all those traditions, institutions and idiosyncrasies that make the school unique and so fondly regarded by Edwardians, old and new. From the co-curricular life of KE, music, drama, sport, trips, the CCF and service will feature. So too will the warp and weft of typical school days, such as the House system, the school song, leavers’ pranks, the Bristol Road run and simply getting to and from this particular leafy part of Edgbaston.

We will also explore the fabric of KE from cloisters to corridors, from the Chapel to the Cartland Room and from the Sacred Sod to the South Field. Individual objects and people will make appearances – Sapientia and the sword of honour, Chief Masters and alumni among others. Our book will also contain a brief history of the school from its foundation in 1552, and some regard for its future during the rest of the 21st century.
