Dr Challoner’s Grammar School
Four hundred years ago a sleepy market town gained a school, thanks to the generosity and foresight of Dr Robert Chaloner. Since 1624 that school has waxed and waned, charting a course reflecting the development of education and the changing social geography of Amersham. That journey, from a small schoolroom in which the local clergyman taught Latin and Greek to one of the country’s most accomplished state schools, is documented in this book, especially commissioned as part of the celebrations of 400 years of education of the children of Amersham and the surrounding area.
