Winchester College : A History

This beautifully illustrated book has been written by a group of academic historians, each specialising in a different period. Early chapters will examine William of Wykeham and the character of the medieval school. The book will then explore how Winchester navigated the upheavals of the Reformation and English Civil Wars, while later chapters consider how the modern school came into being. Alongside the institutional history of the College, the book will provide a lively account of the lives and experiences of pupils over the past six centuries.

Winchester is one of the world’s oldest schools and has an exceptional archive. This book, drawing on a wealth of new research, will therefore be an important contribution to the history of education as well as telling the fascinating story of the College’s past.
